Carmel Beach and Mission

Carmel beckoned Lys and me to her beaches yesterday afternoon.  We took a nice walk along the path overlooking the ocean, where the smell of salt air and rhythm of the ocean waves greeted us in full spring glory.

The waters were filled with surfers, the sand dotted with kite flyers, dog walkers, and picnics.  Looking north, Pebble Beach jutted out into the bay....

We loved the cypress trees providing peek-a-boo views...
glimpses of wildflowers....
and were especially excited to spot a hummingbird enjoying these beautiful purple blossoms, just three feet away from us...
Can you see the hummer right in the middle of the photo below?
Across the road were houses with magnificent ocean views.  This house caught our eye, capturing the fairy tale cottage feel, typical of Hugh Comstock's architecture from the 1920's.  You see these lovely storybook homes and shops sprinkled throughout Carmel.
Finishing our walk, we started home and as we came upon the Carmel Mission, decided to stop for an impromptu walk through the mission.  The mission was built in the 1770's.  Gracing the grounds are pretty gardens and nooks and crannies with statues of Father Junipero Serra, the head of the mission in the 1770's.

Friends of our's were married in this old, historic church several years ago....
I remembered the bride walking down this aisle....

Continuing the tour through the old mission rooms, we found the bedrooms and salon,
with the Spanish architecture touches.

Outside again, the courtyard provided a better view of the bell tower.

And then it was time to head home at last.  Have you re-discovered treasures in your own backyard lately?

Georgia O'Keeffe Exhibit

Lys's birthday was earlier this month so I spent the weekend in San Francisco to celebrate.  We had a wonderful time!  We started with lunch Saturday at a Burmese Restaurant.  It was nothing special on the outside, but the 30 minute wait was an indication of how tasty the food would be inside. From there we went to Golden Gate Park to the de Young Museum to see the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit.
O'Keeffe is one of Lys's favorite artists and we all embraced her work, from large blooms to haunting trees...
Throughout the exhibit there were quotes painted on the walls and in small displays, many by her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz.  One of my favorite quotes of his is:

"The great geniuses are those who have kept their childlike spirit
and have added to it breadth of vision and experience.” – Alfred Stieglitz

Learning about Stieglitz' work piqued my interest in learning more about his work as well.

It had rained off and on that week, providing a tremendous relief for the California drought, though the warm, dry weather since proved it to only be a drop in the bucket.  The skies were already clearing when we emerged from the museum.
We made our way across town toward Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square for hot fudge sundaes.
The greatest part of the day was reveling in the growth and beauty of my daughters.  Celebrating a birthday makes a parent naturally reflect on all the years since the child came into the world, all the smiles and fun times, all the tough times and disappointments, the trial and error times, the jump for joy successes, the disagreements and the embraces, and most of all the love.  It's all about love!  I'm so proud of the woman my daughter Lys has become.  Happy Birthday, my dear!

Sutro Library

Recently I drove up to the Sutro Library on the SFSU campus to do some genealogy research.  What a great place!  It proudly boasts that they have the finest genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and it was impressive!  There were books on family names, books on counties, books on states, books on history....  I found so many great clues to our family history and some research I'm doing for others.  I loved the feel of thick paper in fragile bindings.  The names... so old-fashioned and charming.  I can't wait to spend time there again.
The views of the campus were beautiful from the bright windows!

It would be easy to spend days there, researching family lines.  Of course, the best part was having dinner with my daughters after they got off work that evening!

Now we are having stormy weather in California.  The wind blew and the rain pounded last night, causing my dogs to bark as they heard branches bounce against the fence boards.  Parts of the roads are flooded, causing lane closures and slow moving traffic.  Still we need the rain, so it is hard to complain.

Pasatiempo Golf and Country Club, Santa Cruz, with Pacific Ocean in background
Sorry for the silence. I've been very busy so far this year so my blogging time has taken a hit. To give a sample of what's been filling my time...
~ I completed two online genealogy courses with my sister Chris and we are now certified Volunteer Field Genealogists. We still don't have our bearings in some daunting areas of that field, but it is a little like being a private investigator into a family's past. I'm actually helping 2-3 people complete their papers for the DAR.
~ Working out 3-4 times a week at the gym on way home from work.
~ Taking Frosty to the vet for his final check ups-- he has a clean bill of health at last and his mouth is back to as normal as it's going to get (his jaw will never fit the same so he "eats funny.").
~ All the hustle and bustle of setting up new annual records for the nonprofit organization I run.
~ Attending meetings and coffee claches with friends and fellow community service organizers.
~ Phone time with my daughters and sisters because it's the next best thing to being there.
~ All those mundane things -- car serviced, annual physical, house cleaning.
~ Working on taxes - blech!
~ Driving up to the beautiful Pasatiempo Golf and Country Club with a friend for a lunch meeting, stopping to visit a couple of other friends on the way home.
~ Work, work and more work at the school where I -- oh, yes, that word again -- work.
~ Reading.
~ And yes, a little unwinding time with the Beatles Special, Downton Abbey, and the Olympics!

Today I'm driving up to the city and visiting the Sutro Library's genealogy section.  I'm still trying to find my great-great grandpa.  Then it's dinner with my daughters when they get off work this evening!

I have this week off work and it's splendid to have the extra time!  I'll check in again soon!  Hope you are having a wonderful month of L-O-V-E.

Holidays at the San Francisco Hyatt Regency

Just because the Hyatt created such magic in San Francisco for the holidays, I wanted to post a few more pictures here.  Lys and I enjoyed lunching in this beautiful lobby and then taking pictures and studying the miniature snow village.  I hope you'll enjoy them, too.

Notice the little stream that runs through the lobby above?
Hundreds of animated minatures created a village on a large platform....
 I especially loved the lighthouse.

A New Year Begins

Year after year I sit down and map out my goals for the year.  I love New Years, the clean slate, the spirit of renewal, even the sense of "no-more-procrastinating" that comes with it. My goals are personal and I keep them private (except that my daughters and I go over our lists with each another -- it's part of the fun!), so I won't post them here, but I'm inspired to move forward with them.  Without realizing it, it dawned on me that I'd been working on the Fruits of the Spirit over the last few years  One year I worked on adding Joy into my life, another year Kindness.  This year I made a conscious decision to have Self-Control as my theme word.

Tomorrow is the last day of my Christmas vacation. This Christmas was "different."  Perhaps it was because my girls and I were not able to participate in many of the pre-Christmas traditions with their living in the city and having busy work schedules.  Then, of course, Frosty's injury has been all-consuming.  He has had a round of vet visits, infections, med changes and another surgery, but I think he is finally out of the woods.  (I could write a book about what we've been through with all of that, but I'll save it for another time.)

Poor Frosty -- another surgery on January 2nd -- but this should do the trick!

But what we didn't get to do before Christmas, we did after Christmas!  Last Friday, Ash was in town and we went out for shopping, lunch, and to see "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." We really enjoyed it and decided the trailer doesn't do it justice.

The next day I drove up to San Francisco and Lys and I spent a fabulous day together there!  We went to the Hyatt for lunch, where it snowed (okay, fake man-made snow) in the lobby.

We then walked past the ice skating rink...
... to the historical Ferry Building! This is the architecture that helped the building survive
 the Great Earthquake of 1906.
It still serves the ferries for the Bay area, but also hosts many restaurants and shops, such as this unique "Far West Fungi" (mushroom) shop, decorated for Christmas.
We went outside and watched the ferries come and go and the view of the double-decker Bay Bridge, just enjoying the beautiful California weather. We had a wonderful day and evening together!

Sunday I went to a holiday party in Pebble Beach.  My husband and I lived there for a couple of years and I still miss the ocean view and deer.  I snapped this picture on the road that we lived on, with the golf course behind our house.  I would wait until the golfers finished for the day and then every afternoon I walked the 1.5 miles to the beach and back.  It is one of my fondest memories.  I would see deer grazing, little red foxes running under logs, and then sat on a big piece of driftwood and watched the waves roll in before turning around and heading back home.  It is what made a walker out of me!
My friend and her husband had invited several of us for "wine and canapes," but they had enough delicious food for a feast!  They had Christmas trees in almost every room, each with a different theme, creating a most enchanting setting.

So all's well that ends well!  Happy New Year!

Apple Cake and Cocoa Kinda Morning!

There is something special about the afterglow that comes the day after Christmas.  Contentment from full tummies and happy memories. Relishing the moments when you made others happy with gifts. Smiles over silly jokes made while playing games (we indulged in Monopoly, Uno and Clue this year).  Time to actually re-read the cards and letters that arrived and absorb the latest news from friends and family.  Inhaling the aroma of new fragrances.  I'm still in my new nightie that I received from my sister Linda for Christmas, enjoying a piece of apple cake (heated up in the microwave) and a cup of cocoa (made with milk, not water).
It is scrumptuous -- one of my mom's recipes -- Ash was in a baking mood so whipped it up yesterday.  Here it is, for the curious -- it makes a great little coffee cake in the morning:

Old Fashioned Apple Cake

Preheat over to 350 degrees.  Grease 9X13X2 inch pan.

Batter:
1 package yellow cake mix
1 can apple pie filling (cut up in small chunks)
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
3 eggs
1/2 t. vanilla

Topping:
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine (softened)
1/2 cup flour
1/2 t. vanilla

Combine batter ingredients by hand until well blended.  Spread batter in prepared pan.  Mix topping ingredients with fork until crumbly.  Sprinkle topping evenly over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until cake springs back.

There is something about baking things that your mother made that helps you remember the woman ~ her life, her hands, her smiles and words.  This morning I'm missing my mom.

Last night I sat down with the 2014 Susan Branch calendar my daughter Ash gifted me and wrote in all the birthdays and special events I want to remember.  I love fresh starts.

Now I better get ready!  Ash and I are going over to the bookstore and out to lunch. Then I'm off to pamper myself with a pedicure!  Tonight's dinner will be left overs from yesterday -- yum!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
